Chapter 6

It was the first time in a long time that Oscar was finally able to get a good night of rest. With the case at a standstill before they had discovered the symbol, he felt guilty every time he tried to sleep. He deemed it a waste of time trying to sleep, especially when Chief was practically breathing down his neck with his demands for results.

He awoke before his alarm. It was too early, and it was still dark outside. He figured he had time to spare as he stood in his kitchen making coffee. He dressed for work and sat on the couch, phone in hand, reading the news.

Suddenly his phone rang. His eyes flicked to the time at the corner of his phone, and he frowned. Who could be calling at this hour, and from an unknown number, this early in the morning?

Oscar’s mild curiosity turned into concern when he realized something could have happened to Ava in the hospital.

“What happened?” he asked into the phone, his tone urgent.

Silence.

He softly cursed as he repeated his previous question.

“Did something happen to Ava?”

Oscar waited a few more long seconds before he removed the phone from his ear and aimed for the red button to end the call. Before he could do that, he heard the soft voice of a person on the other end of the line.

“They’re going to do it again,” they had said.

Oscar sat up straight in his seat.

“They’re going to do what?”

Were they referring to the murders?

“Abandoned building. Arthur and Lana. They’re going to do it again.”

Oscar strained to hear the other person, but sure enough, he caught onto each word and ingrained them into his mind. He was supposed to visit Ava first thing in the morning to talk to her about her dreams, but that could wait till later.

After sending a quick text to Ellie explaining the call and that he was going to be late, he grabbed his jacket and drove off to the abandoned building. By the time he had gotten to the building, sunlight had begun to stream through the trees, and it bathed him and the car in a warm light.

As picturesque as it all seemed, the quiet of the building and the landscape around him caused Oscar to be constantly on guard. Something didn’t feel right. He ignored it and went straight into the building, heading directly to the floor Arthur and Lana were found in.

About halfway there, he heard footsteps of others echoing throughout the empty building. Oscar stopped and looked around. He saw no place to hide. He was still on the staircase, making him vulnerable on both sides.

If he were to encounter any hostile people, he knew he couldn’t possibly fight them by himself. He texted Ellie his location, just in case something was to happen, and continued straight ahead.

He was right. The moment he reached the top of the stairs, he saw silhouettes of three figures waiting, presumably, for him. Oscar turned back as quiet as he could to return to the car.
